Meet Neptune’s Maid
Inspired by the haunting imagery and themes of The Handmaid’s Tale, particularly the resilience of its central character June, Neptune’s Maid is a striking visual statement on female suppression and silent resistance. The figure in the painting wears a bonnet reminiscent of those imposed upon women in the series—a symbol of control, modesty, and the erasure of identity and sexuality.Yet, unlike the anonymous, bowed figures of Gilead, the woman in Neptune’s Maid lifts her face toward the light. Her fringe is visible, her gaze defiant, subtly breaking the constraints imposed upon her. She becomes an emblem—not only of one fictional dystopia but of real, ongoing systems that seek to subdue female autonomy through enforced modesty and silence.
This work draws on political poster aesthetics, meant to evoke both protest and empowerment. It stands in solidarity with women across cultures who continue to fight for visibility, agency, and freedom. Neptune’s Maid is not just a portrait—it is a call to rise.
