Savouring the Garden
Savouring the Garden was inspired by the heroines of Jane Austen. Her characters were women who often escaped into gardens, fields, or wild landscapes to find moments of reflection and freedom. In Austen’s novels, nature becomes both a refuge and a stage where her characters negotiate the tensions of societal expectations and their own inner longings.
The figure in this work carries that same spirit of retreat and resilience. Dressed in modern clothing, she sits within an impressionistic environment. Her skin is painted in warm orange and iset apart from the confines of tradition and the pressures of conformity.
This painting is a meditation on solitude as empowerment. To step into a garden, to claim a small pocket of space away from imposed roles, is to savour life on one’s own terms.
